Greetings! I am the new social worker at Maple Ridge. I am here to support students on their mental wellness through counselling sessions. The sessions offered are short-term counselling for a variety of mental health challenges that may be impact students’ ability to excel in the school. In sessions, students can expect to share their mental health goals, review their current coping strategies, and explore new skills to support and improve their wellness.
Students may wish to come see me if they are struggling with their mental health or have concerns about their mental health. Most often students are experiencing anxiety and/or depressive symptoms (with or without a formal diagnosis). Other concerns could be self-esteem, self-harm, relationship issues (with peers or family). The program is 6 months, with an option to end earlier or extend if needed.
I build trusting relationships with both students and staff to identify and eliminate barriers and to create a safe and caring space for Black students to make strong connections and transitions within their chosen pathways. I will help students to establish impactful mentorship relationships. I believe relationships are built primarily through listening, and trust is established through consistent follow through. As a Graduation Coach I have an open-door policy and I am always happy to help students.
Shekolih/Aaniin/Hello,
My name is Sundown. I am the new Indigenous Grad Coach for the Barrie South Area. My role as the Indigenous Graduation Coach is to provide support to students and act as a mentor & advisor; to help identify barriers, points of intervention, and facilitate access and referrals to academic support, community support, as well as school resources for student achievement and wellbeing. Points of assistance might include mentorship, coaching, motivating, drumming, assisting with community and/or cultural connection, academic and/or family support. |
Students may want to connect if they feel disconnect from their self; this could reflect on topics regarding identity, cultural connection, spirituality and belonging. I share my knowledge of the medicine wheel, representing the four directions of “self” – Physical, emotional, spiritual and mental and how to create balance in these four aspects. I love to use humour, storytelling and traditional teachings in my practice, help students to amplify their voice, advocate and share their knowledge.
