Our congregated special education class, known as our STARS (Students Taking Action and Responsibility for Success), is selling beautiful Fraser Fir wreathes that you can decorate for the winter season and whatever celebrations are part of your family culture and traditions. The fundraiser is being done in partnership with Drysdale’s Tree Farm. The funds raised will be used to support enhanced experiential learning opportunities for the students.
More about the wreathes:
The deadline to purchase a wreath is Thursday November 11. There will be a drive through pick up in the parking lot at Maple Ridge S.S. on December 6 from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

Maple Ridge is a Legacy School with the Downie Wenjack Foundation (DWF), an organization that supports truth and reconciliation learning and action in schools across Canada. To begin our school's journey as a Legacy School, today we held a school-wide event called Walk for Wenjack. Learn more about the DWF Legacy Schools Program.
Walk for Wenjack started in 2016 to honour the legacy of Chanie Wenjack, an Anishinaabe boy from Marten Falls First Nation. In 1963, at the age of nine, he was sent to a residential school in Kenora, Ontario. Three years later, he ran away trying to reunite with his family 600 kilometers away. Chanie joined the spirit world on October 22, 1966, a week after he fled. His body was found by the railway tracks. His death sparked the first inquest into the treatment of Indigenous children at residential schools. The first Walk for Wenjack, in 2016, retraced Chanie’s steps. As a school community, we collectively walked the 600 km that it would have taken Chanie to get home to his family. Students had opportunities on the track to learn more about Chanie’s story and to connect with educators from the SCDSB Indigenous Education team to learn more. If you would like to make a donation to the Downie Wenjack Foundation, please click go directly to Maple Ridge's team fundraising page, https://bit.ly/MRSSWalkforWenjack . The campaign ends on Oct. 31st. |
